An open pattern thimble (such as the Crosby G-408) is a tear-drop shaped metal loop with a wider throat opening than a standard closed thimble. Designed for light-duty wire rope applications, it allows the thimble to be easily slipped into and assembled with other closed fittings like shackles or master links.
