A ball hook in rigging (often called an overhaul ball or headache ball) is a heavy weighted sphere attached to a crane’s wireline just above the hook. It provides the necessary ballast (weight) to keep the line taut when no load is attached, which prevents cable tangling, bird nesting, and twisting.
